LEG AMPUTATION AVOIDED
WITH 2 ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS
Clinical Case
42-year-old female patient
Physical education teacher
Country: England
A trauma caused by the impact of a bicycle on the right thigh caused the following signs and symptoms:
Acute, localized, stabbing-like pain of grade 8-10 on the VAS scale (scale 0-10 | 0: no pain | 10: unbearable, disabling pain that prevents activities).
Sharp pain to the touch (allodynia)
Burning sensation (peripheral neuropathy)
Limb stiffness with severe loss of mobility (dyskinesia)
Virtually total paralysis of the foot
The patient was followed up in neurology at hospitals in England and diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Type II (nerve rupture) and informed that there was no cure.
After 2 years of suffering and several neurology consultations in England, the patient was proposed to amputate the limb.
The patient came to Portugal to have an appointment with me in the hope of finding an alternative and avoiding amputation.
In the consultation, in addition to the neurological condition, the patient presented the following signs and symptoms:
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Panic attacks
Anxiety
We performed 2 acupuncture treatments during the week that the patient stayed in Portugal.
I highlight the fact that the first treatment had to be carried out on the contralateral limb because the patient did not allow the touch of the affected limb.
After the first treatment, the patient was already able to move her foot.
After the second treatment, the pain decreased by 80%, going to level 2 pain on the VAS scale (2: mild pain that does not compromise activities).
She was prescribed a Chinese herbal medicine formula to continue the treatment when she returned to the UK.
After 1 month, the pain practically disappeared, with asymptomatic periods alternating with moments of residual pain of grade 1-2 on the VAS scale.
The patient returned to her life and went back to work.

LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION (LDH)
8 Needles Method
by Dr. Joel Salvador
Created by Dr. Joel Salvador, the ‘8 Needles Method’ was the topic of his Master's Thesis and it was analyzed in a clinical study at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine China, for the obtaining of the academic degree 'Master of Medicine' by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
Clinical Study | Methods
A total of 60 patients with a definite diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation participated in the clinical study.
Several scales were used to evaluate the pain, the quality of life and the function levels in completing physical and social activities (VAS, JOA, RMDQ, ODIQ), and MRI were used to evaluate the clinical condition.
Results
The statistically significant means results (p< .001) obtained after one ‘8 Needles Method’ treatment course, managed to prove by itself that this acupuncture method was clinically very effective in the treatment of the LDH, once it can:
• Treat the symptoms caused by the disc herniation
• Resolve the disc herniation itself
Conclusion
The 8 needles method acupuncture treatment is a non-evasive alternative to surgery with no side effects.
